the fiery furnaces

i think they're going to be around for a long time. it will be interesting to see if they change their style on their next album to respond to critices replies that their songs were unfocused. i agree with that charge, but that doesnt lessen my opinion about the duo. i think it will be even more interesting if other bands start releasing the same kind of long, whimsical, tunes the brother and sister are known for.

Otis Redding- "Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay"

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way

So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

(whistle)

for the love of music: or, why i love broken ipods

per a conversation with a friend of mine, i feel the need to extend my criticism of music makers on a public forum. no one i know should take this as a personal affront: these views are general and aimed at raising the standards by which you perfect your art.   first, a definition of where im coming from: 1. i cant stand the music industry. like dinosaurs, their time is way over with.  2. aspiring musicians, with painters in a near second place-- are a dime a dozen for all the bad music they produce and continue to make on an ongoing basis.  people often think that  because one can listen to great music that means you should try to make great music.  hipsters and hop hoppers are noticeable for their lack in anything creative, original, or innovative in the omni channel market place. is that insulting or is that a challenge?  if its insulting you're probably making bad music in the first place.  if its inspiring-- that you will not make bad music, that you will excel at the impossible and creative forces of destiny to propel yourself into new creative adventures that  fall into your ears: you are who im writing this for.  we have been living in dismal times for music as the cost of entry lowers and automation of sound increases.  music is the most important tool for a group of people to express themselves with and we have been doing so badly for way to long (at least since the death of kurt cobain).  i admit to having high standards for music makers and the music they make, one has to: the impact it has on the mental and creative states to generations of listeners is too important to f*** with.  my first piece of evidence supporting this theory is hip hop.  no other kind of music in history (except possibly country music) can boast of degrading and criminalizing the potential of so many people in the world.  (again, is that insulting, or challenging??) my suggestion for those who would make music:  live alone on a mountain for a dozen years with your instrument of choice. then after that dozen years, i think you should have to prove your worth by another dozen years of peer review before being aloud to play to a general audience. think of it as the ultimate yogis music school.  but hell, im getting ahead of myself, with garageband (the music making software), why bother!  a few clicks of a button and your not just jimi hendrix, you're mozart, cnn que up music, a dj and so hip-your-a-popotamus!  by and large- as can be expected of any art, the music sucks, the worst generic productions sell to the most teenager girls and starve to death the artist that has honed their sitar for decades.  most musicians should stop, never pick up an instrument again, and start enjoying music again.  same goes for music majors in college, i pity your poor souls!  the desire to get laid and make mucho money = 99% of anyones interest in music these days which is 110% the wrong reasons to get involved with an art.  i love hipsters emphatically denying this, however suave they lie to the truth.  im genuinely encouraged by the high number of new bands that are actually doing something slightly different if barely stepping out of bounds of the brit pop/church choir formula.  but i digress.  please, for all you dedicated aspirants out there trying to please the crowd, rather than clicking the idiot button on garageband which these instant musicians and instant one hit wonder bands who are so "musically adept" of boring me to tears: master your craft.  and for the love of jove, im listening to my music, i dont need to hear yours blaring on myspace!!
